Instructions:
You are required to evaluate a bi-/multilingual classroom activity for a specific educational setting, and justify/discuss this with reference to relevant academic literature (theory): 1) situate it briefly in the wider context of relevant regional/local politics of language and the learning context, and 2) more extensively within the theories/perspectives of bi-/multilingual approaches to learning and teaching
Outline reference:
1. Title

2. Introduction (approx. 400 words)
Introduce the rationale and the aims of the essay
Introduce what you will do in the essay (e.g. present & evaluate a lesson plan based on XYZ theories)
Outline structure of the essay
3. Context (approx. 250 words)
Introduction explain what you will do in this part
Describe the linguistic situation in the chosen country/region.
Describe the acquisition and status policy in that context
Describe a particular classroom/course you are familiar with and the language backgrounds of potential learners, explain your role in this (former/future learner/teacher/other).
4. Theoretical part (section approx. 1200 words)
Introduction explain what you will do in this part
Have a section on the main theories that you will draw on (try to be critical: if possible show any overlaps, links, shortcomings, relevance to your context, etc.)
Provide a list/table/summary of dimensions/criteria/factors/etc. related to the above theories (to help your discussion/evaluation)
Use the template on ELE to develop a lesson plan and put this in the appendix. You can use elements from the lesson plans presented by your peers, but you have to design a new one.
5. Presentation and evaluation of activity (approx. 1500 words)
Introduction explain what you will do in this part
Introduce the lesson/activity you designed/selected and refer to the lesson plan (in the appendix). The activity can be short (20-30 mins) or it can be a longer session or a seminar, perhaps including student preparation and homework. You may want to say what might come before and after this one lesson. Give references if you use materials from a book/website/other sources.
Explain what theories informed/could inform or underlie pedagogic thinking in different parts of your lesson plan and critically evaluate and discuss any potential benefits or challenges for teaching and learning in your context. Give references to literature again whenever you refer to theories/other peoples ideas.
Evaluate in what way such an activity might be useful in your context and why or why not (use hedging as you probably speculate here).
6. Conclusion (approx. 400 words)
Briefly summarise what you did in this essay
Highlight the main points of your essay, and explain what you as a teacher, or other teachers in similar contexts, can learn from this. You may want to recommend concrete actions and maybe further research.
