The Maccabean Revolt

The Hellenistic world was characterized by competition: rivalries among the Successor kings who were the heirs to Alexanders empire and rivalries among their multiform subject populations for benefits and recognition. One of the ways in which a given populace could gain prestige in this era was through establishing a claim to Greek heritage or culture. But embracing a Greek identity was not always an option (consider native Egyptians for instance, who were excluded from the Greek city of Alexandria) nor was it considered desirable by all. Traditional forms of what we might call identity construction were being transformed in this new, multiethnic, multistate environment. This brings us to Judaea and its conflict with the Seleucids.
