– AIDS and it’s Metaphors by Susan Sontag
– AIDS, Homophobia and discourse by Paula Treichler
– AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and Geography of Blame: Attaching only Chapters 1, 5, 7, 18, 19, 21 for examples- no need to read in detail, can correlate with class notes and use the relevant parts.
Here are the professor’s instructions-
– Font- Times 12pt
– Have a thesis. A strong solid thesis.
-Use proof in the form of examples from the text and fully explain your examples. Introduce your example, say your example, and then write about what your example was supposed to illustrate. Describe the example fully. Develop your examples and then make sure they PROVE what you want them to by TELLING me what they prove. Same thing with quotes. State the quote and then tell me what you think the quote means.
-Make claims and then use evidence from other scholars or examples to back up your claims or to disagree with. You can disagree with people.
-Use texts and argue alongside or against them.
-Define the terms you use (What does AIDS as a metaphor mean? What does MSM mean? What does racism mean? What is sex negativity?).
-Complicate your generalizations- think about it for a second- do all cultures actually do what you say? Which dont and why? This wont make your argument wrong, but instead will nuance it.
Dont point to something and then move on. Instead point to something and then explain how it relates to your thesis—-lists are not proof- they are just lists.
