Write a research paper on the differences in South American countries’ human rights policies.Develop a research question
Importance of the question for scholarship and policy
Review the literature on your question
Outline a strategy for answering this question, addressing each of the following:
Operationalize the dependent variable (or what’s being caused)
Develop a series of alternative explanations for the outcome
Operationalize independent variables (or what’s doing the causing)
Discuss case selection (what cases are you going to look at and why)
Develop a testing procedure (or, how you will test your arguments, and how you
will know you are right)
Attach a preliminary bibliography (not included for page purposes).
Draft/Final Manuscriipt
Your completed project will be a minimum of 30 pages (double-spaced with 1″ margins and 12 point fonts with numbered pages)
1) The Problem and its Importance
2) Literature Review
3) Research Design
4) Findings and Discussion
5) Conclusions
6) Bibliography
The finished product must consist either of a set of comparative case studies (if a qualitative project) or a set of multivariate statistical tests with discussion of statistical and substantive
This was the feedback I received for my draft: The purpose of writing this assignment is not just to give you something to do – you need to talk about findings-and in fact, you need to HAVE findings to talk about them. See the global comments about organizing the introduction. And this having been said, is a mixed methods approach really necessary here? More to say on that below.
The Problem and its Importance
This section is fine and remains so. But this importance section goes BEFORE the literature review and not after it.
Literature Review
There needs to be citations here. Anytime you reference anything – put the citation in for it.
Conventionally, literature reviews are ideally organized around rival IVs so that it sets up what comes next in the research design.
Note as well that this section needs a wrap-up paragraph. What did you learn from this literature review, and how did it inform the choices in the research design below?
Research Design: STILL LOTS TO DO HERE!
DV: I’m still not sure what we’re doing here. See comments on the research design.
Independent variables:
It certainly sounds like historical legacies is measured….how? a ten year average of the political terror score? A one year lag? What makes the most sense here?
Regime type: measured….how?
Socioeconomic factors – again: what’s the measure and source?
Human rights protection – again: what’s the measure and source?
NOTE: if this becomes a quantitive test – note that you are going to need to think about collinearity because it might be a problem
Cases:
Needs to be clearer why these eight countries and not others
Need temporal domain of study as well
Testing procedure:
Given that some of these proposed measures are certainly quantitative, why does any qualitative testing make sense here?
Findings
none
Discussion
None
