This 2-part assignment explores the interplay of the regulatory mandates and constitutional protections impacting the educational process, as well as school safety considerations.

Part 1: Scenario Responses
Scenario #1 Student Attendance
As the school administrator, you review student attendance reports and notice that a student in your high school, Anthony Smith, has chronic absentee issues, yet always has an excused absence called in by his mother. Anthony has missed so much school that his grades are dropping, and his teachers have reported that he is missing too much school and not completing assignments.
Scenario #2 Student Truancy Issue
A new student, Julia Johnson, has enrolled in first grade at your school. In the first week of school, Julia is only present on the day she was enrolled. There have been no phone calls from the parents requesting an excused absence. Within two weeks, Julia has not returned to school and the school staff and teachers are not able to reach Julia’s parents to discuss her absence. The school office received Julia’s records from her previous school and noted that she had a very poor attendance record at that school.
Read Scenarios 1 and 2 above and write a 200- to 275-word response to each scenario in which you address the following questions:
Explain how you would handle the situation. What specific actions will you take, and why? Include the legal policies guiding your actions.
Locate your district’s policy on student attendance and truancy. How would these policies guide your actions?
Scenario #3 Religion and Student Expression
Jean Riley is the principal of a small elementary school in a metropolitan school district. One of her best teachers asked her first graders to make a poster depicting things for which they were thankful. One student made a poster expressing thanks for Jesus. Posters were displayed in the schools hallway. The students poster was removed but later returned to a less prominent place. The next year, the student was chosen to read a story to the class. The student selected an adaptation of a biblical story.
Read Scenario 3 above and write a 200- to 275-word response in which you address the following questions:
Should the student be permitted to read his biblical story? Why or why not?
What legal risks does the school incur (if any) if it permits both of these activities?
What legal risks does the school incur if it denies both of these practices?
How would the courts likely rule on this case? Provide a rationale for your response.

Part 2: Emergency Preparedness Interview and Reflection
Review your school or districts emergency preparedness or response plan and compare it to the guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education in the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans.
Formulate at least 5 questions that you believe are important about emergency preparedness or response planning and interview your school principal or administrator about your schools plan.
Write a 525- to 700-word reflection of your learning from your review of your schools emergency preparedness or response plan and the interview you conducted with your school principal or administrator on the topic. Include the following in your reflection:
Explanation of the national preparedness efforts that are now informed by Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) 8
Summary of your findings from reviewing your schools emergency preparedness or response plan
Summary of what was learned from your interview and how it will be applied
Compile your 3 scenario responses and your reflection into 1 document for submission.
