In my opinion, one of the most notable ways technology has improved the efficiency of law enforcement processes is the creation of crime maps. Arbitrary patrol will seldom lead to catching crimes in progress or result in a reduction of the crime rate. This is especially true the larger a departments jurisdiction. Previously crime was logged using tables or reports which do not link an event to a geographic location. This does not help departments allocate resources appropriately and will only indicate if a crime problem is getting better or worse.
With crime mapping, new patrol strategies become available and the ability to combat crime is enhanced. Hot spot policing, or targeting areas with relatively high crime rates, becomes an available option. Facilitating hot spot policing was the most common reason surveyed police departments made the transition to computerized crime mapping (Stults 2021).
Crime mapping allows departments to predict crime trends, and this is something that could not be done before crime mapping. The transition to crime mapping is indicative that crime targeting has moved from being person-based to location-based. Instead of targeting criminals and focusing on who commits the crime, agencies shifted their focus to where the crime is occurring. Preventative policing using crime mapping works; the Los Angeles Police Department has used spatial predictions of crime to preemptively allocate patrol units and have estimated that geographical criminal intelligence has decreased violent crimes by 5.4% and homicides by 22.6% (Fitterer et al. 2015).
What makes technology-driven crime mapping unparalleled to other methods of portraying crime data. Modeling BNE risk multiple times per day is only feasible if it can be performed without analyst intervention, particularly when predictions are required outside typical working hours (Fitterer et al. 2015). Automation allows for to most up to date crime maps and reduces the chance of human error.
Another benefit of crime mapping is making criminal justice organizations more transparent and improving community relations with law enforcement. The survey presented in Wuschke et al. indicated only 2% of respondents believed the crime maps should be withheld from the public (Wuschke et al. 2021).
