Domestic violence is not a new crime. Culturally, domestic violence has been present throughout the years, as male dominant or patriarchal cultures have allowed and in some cases promoted domestic violence (Johnson & Ferraro, November 2000, p. 949; Karmen, 2020, p. 322). Research suggests that the majority of domestic violence is committed by males on females, but further research has found that one out of every seven men (14 percent) (Karmen, 2020, p. 328) fall victim to domestic violence. Karmen (2016, p. 328) also says that one out four women fall victim to domestic violence. This was 23% of population in the United States, which is substantial number of our population (Karmen, 2020, p. 328). Johnson and Ferraro (November 2000, p. 948) estimates of two million women in the United States are victims of domestic violence.Discuss the problem of underreporting with domestic violence (Karmen, 2020, p. 328). Underreporting of criminal behavior, poses a large problem for criminologists and victimologists, as the lack of data skews the information that can be analyzed and gives inappropriate directions to research.

The collection of data appears to have holes, which allows certain particular data sets to slip through the collection process. First, the perception of society on domestic violence reporting appears to have some sort of tolerance for abusive behavior. Underreporting for fear of loss of monetary support, fear of damage to children, and fear of further violence should not be considered when physical violence is involved. Resorting to physical violence is a sign of immaturity and lack of social development. These individuals can and should be properly identified in the education system and diverted to appropriate anger management classes, as well as stress awareness development courses. Particular curriculum should be developed at the childs educational level to curtail this behavior.

Secondly, the non-reporting provides particular problems as society has stigmatisms attached to male victims reporting abuse from females, or male partners. The demasculinization of those individuals and their failure to report abuse to law enforcement creates extended stress and further criminal behavior as the anti-social behavior further develops. As well the specific data is not collected and does not allow law enforcement officer, policy makers, and rehabilitative services to properly address the issue. Law enforcement is not able to properly address events that have been festering with these violent events. Policy makers are not able to address or grasp the full scale of the needs of the public, and services for rehabilitation are not properly channeled. RoyceMarlow
