For this week you were expected to have read the first four chapters of the textbook and viewed the accompanying PowerPoints and video lecture.
After you read the chapters, I want you to provide a 2-3 paragraph summary of the readings (you could post more if you want) followed by a discussion post that’s 8-9 paragraphs in length answering the following 8 questions:
1) What is the role of media in American culture today and why?
2) Is social media a good or bad platform for society and why?
3) Provide an example of modern day propaganda, and attach an image of your example to this post.
4) Go to the front page of two different news organizations and applying the theory of Agenda Setting explain what each news organization considers important, what the differences are between the two front pages, and why you think those differences exist.
5) Find an example of a cultural stereotype in modern media and explain where you found it, what the stereotype is and what changes the media organization needs to implement to avoid making this kind of mistake again.
6) What are you sources of information? In other words how do you consume news to be a better informed member of society? Why do you consume the listed sources of information? Provide SPECIFICS and not generalized answers like “Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.” What INDIVIDUALS or ORGANIZATIONS do you gather your news and information from?
7) Based on the Media Bias article you’re required to read what news organizations do you consider to be the most and least trustworthy and why?
8) Following the viewing of John Oliver’s segment on newspapers and journalism do you still think free forms of media content, including social media, is a good thing for a democratic society? Why?
