To do well in this assignment, first do the listening, viewing, and reading. Your paper should have the following elements:
This week you will experiment with how we can communicate about climate change mitigation and adaptation as something that is possible and something we can all engage in.
First, watch the film: 2040. Take notes based on the orienting questions, and think about how you are responding to the strategy that the film uses to engage the audience. Reflect on the other films we have watched. How does this work for you? What does or does not work and why?
Then, watch the film called the Intersection. How do you respond to the film? How does this differ from 2040? How can you understand it using the tools from class?
After watching the films, read the article assigned that analyze the film as an example of “fact-based dreaming.” Take notes based on the orienting questions for class, and see if you can connect the claims in the article to the film. Do you agree or disagree with their claims about the film? Why? How do the claims we have gathered so far match up to the claims the authors make?
Finally, draft an outline for a model fictional or non-fiction film/podcast/article/book that communicates about climate change. Start by giving us a title and genre. Then, briefly outline what the media object would say or do during its duration. Explain how this example is the same or different from 2040, Intersection. Finally, support your claims about why your proposal will be effective by drawing on Fact Based Dreaming and the other materials from class so far. When it comes time to write, structure your writing in two parts: Part 1 is an overview of your proposal; Part 2 is an analysis of why this proposal is the right one to make. Be clear about the claims you make and the evidence that supports those claims. Keep your work close to the materials to ensure a clear relationship between your claims and the evidence. Use a citation style that makes it clear from where you are drawing as you write. Two pages, please (double-spaced @ in 12-point font).
