*This essay is about the short story “Everything that rises must converge” by Flannery O’Conner. I have attached a pdf file on the short story for reference.
*Specifications: Short paper: 3-5 pages and at least 6 paragraphs, double-spaced, normal 12-point font and 1 inch margins. Include at least two quotes or details (two specific pieces of evidence) per body paragraph. Add a work cited entry to the end of the essay
*In this essay, focus first on fairly summarizing one characters (or one type of characters) behavior, thoughts, and perspective or point of view in Everything That Rises Must Converge (he/she/they say) and then, second, analyzing that point of view, behavior, beliefs (I say). What is right, wrong, or sympathetic about the given role the person plays in his or her world or his or her point of view? Consider how a character expresses his or her views on other people, on race, notions of superiority, class and identity, mothering, sons, race and racial identity, assumptions about racial or class superiority and/or inferiority, power, conflict, social barriers. You might consider the symbolism of the bus, hats, or wallpaper, the titles or the idea of a reducing class or high blood pressure, whether Julians mother deserves what happens to her or not, the narrators perspective, etc. You might consider the societys views (they say). Use one paragraph to contrast that characters perspective to another characters behavior or perspective (find one that is either similar or different to your characters approach).
*Some questions to prompt your writing:
1. What does a character or type of character believe about him or her self and his or her value, about other people, society, whether in terms of racial difference, and integration? What does he/she desire or prefer? How is the perspective conventional or different or resistant (how does society view him or her)?
Possible Thesis: X suffers from the societys limited view of women.
2. What is the significance of the hat in OConnors story? What does it mean that the two mothers are wearing the same hat? How different or similar are the mothers perspectives about society, people, races, or integration? How are their perspectives different or similar? Possible Thesis: The hats represent the societys control over womens roles and identities.
3. Focus on one characters perspective or point of view. For instance, in Everything That Rises, what is Julians perspective on his mother, family, society, race, life? Why is his different from his mothers perspective? Did Julians perspective impact his behavior? Does he actively promote change in the world for the better? How or how not? Why or why not? Possible Thesis: Julians perspective is more advanced than most in his society, but it is still flawed.
4. Effect of history or the past: Some have assumed that the individuals cannot be held responsible for their failure to adjust to social changes, but ____________.
A present that is haunted by the past is the situation in ____________ when ___.

The Hidden issues in Everything That Rises Must Converge
Placed in the time of a society where the Civil Rights Movement was gaining force, Flannery OConnors Everything That Rises Must Converge shows the deep contrast of thinking between two generations nestled in the era of major societal changes. They should rise, yes, but on their side of the fence(Conner 276) said Julians mother, highlighting the outgoing, racist-centric ideology that was predominant in the Old South. In return, Julian responded Lets skip it.(Connor 276) which shows Julians reluctance to accept his mothers thinking. In conclusion, the story follows a theme of a paradigm shift in societal thinking that focuses in on two specific individuals based in that time. Essentially, we see the change in peoples thinking when it comes to issues of race and how touchy of a topic it truly becomes.
