Summary I wrote:
There have been several studies that suggest a number of reasons for the decline of Maya civilization in the southern lowlands, including overpopulation, environmental degradation, and drought. Crop yields may have also been affected by strained agricultural land. Moreover, the overpopulation of the region, where it is estimated that there were between 3 million to 11 million Maya inhabiting the area, may have caused a scarcity of resources, causing the once powerful rulers to crumble further. The collapse likely resulted from a combination of factors which I will discuss in this paper.
My research seeks to understand the demise of the Maya Civilization and whether societal dynamics linked to natural resource depletion can provide an explanation for the ultimate fall of the Classic Maya. My argument is that the drought-ridden land and over-population were primary contributions to the destruction of their civilization.
