Substance Abuse Assessment – Week 5 – Cultural Considerations for Testing

Some of the key challenges and issues related to psychological testing of racial and ethnic minority patients include limited multicultural competent counselors, testing patients in a second language by clinicians with limited proficiency in that language, and underrepresentation of counselors from ethnic minorities. According to Hay (2016), counselors must speak the patients language, provide a culturally responsive testing environment, and use only valid, reliable translated versions of tests. More importantly, a critical consideration is to recognize that No individuals behavior and functioning can be understood without a thorough understanding of his or her cultural identity and context (p. 193).

1) If you were assigned to this client, what are four key assessment planning areas that need to be addressed?

2) Which psychological testing tool could be used to help this client develop into her best self? In other words, how would you, as the counselor, create a culture-sensitivity therapeutic environment?

3) What areas do you feel you can further develop in order to become a more culturally competent counselor? (i.e., attitudes and beliefs about other cultures, self-awareness, your own cultural values, etc.)
