Following a Social Policy (Bill) Part I Due Week 12
Selecting a Bill
Each student will follow a pending social policy bill introduced before our current Congress (Senate or House of Representatives). The bill you select should be of interest to you and should address a specific social problem; you will have to advocate in support or opposition to the bill.
Part I Due Week 12
This section constitutes approximately the first 1/2 of the final product and should be 8-10 pages in length. This may be the first time you have written a paper about policy, but all the standard writing requirements for a social work paper are involved. You should start your paper with an introduction. There should be transitions between subjects, headings and subheadings when appropriate, and there should be a conclusion section. The sections outlined below are required. Be sure to provide them in the order listed below.

H.R.7037 – School Social Workers Improving Student Success Act
This bill provides certain resources to increase the number of social workers in elementary and secondary schools. The bill directs the department of education to award grants to high need local educational agencies to retain or hire school social workers. This bill would also provide technical assistance for school social work.
Referred to the House Committee on Education and Labor.
Introduced in house on March 9, 2022, waiting to get passed in the House.
The primary sponsor is congresswoman Gwen Moore and cosponsor congresswoman Barbara Lee and cosponsor Sanford Bishop, Jr..

The state should provide more direct mental wellness support services and activities in schools as a whole population approach and not just for identified students. To do this, we must support and sustain school social workers across the state.

Description/Nature of the Social Problem
Define and describe the social problem the bill is responding to.
How widespread is the problem?
Provide a summary of literature and research findings that document the social problem and suggest its cause(s).
Creates a Department of Education grant program to support elementary and secondary schools in hiring and retaining the minimum ratio of one school social worker for every 250 students and one school social worker for every 50 students for high need areas.
