Your summary will be an overview of a nutrition-related peer-reviewed primary article of your choosing that was
published since 2011. The summary should be written for an audience that has a general background in biology and
chemistry, but no specific background in nutrition beyond that of an average American. Your audience members are
interested in nutrition only to the point of using it to improve the quality of their life (weight loss, prevention of
chronic disease, increasing life expectancy, etc.).
1. Research objectives. Outline the basic research objectives of the article. To whom or what group were the
researchers directing the objectives of their research? (10% of possible points)
2. Methodology and hypothesis testing. Describe the basic methodology that the researchers used to test their
hypotheses. Detailed descriptions of the materials and methods are not necessary, but you should highlight
those parts of the methodology that are especially relevant to the study outcomes. Examples of especially
relevant items include:
Species included in study (humans, rats, etc.)
Number of subjects included in the study
Specific group(s) included in study (45 year old males, 6 month old mice, children between the age of
5-8, etc.)
Specific treatments applied to groups
(30% of possible points)
3. Results. Outline the important findings of the article. Why were these results so critical to their conclusions?
(25% of possible points)
4. Conclusions. Outline the major conclusions of the article. Did any of their results contradict their
hypotheses? (20% of possible points)
5. Relevance. Describe which information contained within the research article would be of greatest interest to
your average American audience. Why would they care about the article? (10% of possible points)
6. References/Bibliography. Are references formatted and cited correctly? (5% of possible points)
7. Grammar and readability. You may receive a penalty of up to 20% of the total assignment points for poor
grammar and/or readability.
There is no minimum length requirement for the summary; however, I would expect a report of this type to be at least
3-5 pages in length. Please use 11-point font with 1.5 spacing.
