It presents a constant threat, and it tests the courage of individuals. In the worlds broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life (Longfellow 573) the world itself is compared to a field of battle. Therefore, human individuals exist within the conflict of a battlefield, which symbolizes the challenges of life and the bravery required to overcome them. The speaker acknowledges that individuals can go through this battlefield like “dumb, driven cattle (Longfellow 573). These individuals who are like cattle never face the conflict of life head-on. They experience the conflict passively, which the speaker implies, in a timid way. In contrast, individuals can become “a hero in the strife (Longfellow 573). A “hero” is an inspirational figure who has great courage. In order to live as a hero within the battlefield of the world, an individual must live in the present. As America evolves during the 19th century, it is just like a battle. There will be doubt and challenges and people who are timid and afraid of change, however, conflicts become resolved and the participants gain knowledge and eventually an outcome. The outcome is not always what is desired or expected but it is what you move forward with anyway.
