Step 4: Address any potential hypotheses identified. Here is an example: The town of Colfax is pronounced thusly [Klfks] by many central and north Louisiana residents. Outsiders often render the term as [Klfks] (think the word coal). This single pronunciation of the o becomes a word which can clearly indicate in-group versus outsider usage.
Step 5: Address sample size–how many people will be observed or interviewed?
