Much of the effect of Maungwudaus’s travel account comes from the fact that the narrator is an Ojibwe traveler who describes Europeans (especially the British) from the position of an “outsider looking in.” What different effects does Maungwudaus’s narrative achieve through doing so? What different kinds of observations, humor, and critique does he express through this outsider perspective as an Indigenous person traveling in Europe? What are the most interesting and surprising moments, and why?

My close reading of this text will center around the idea that Maungwudauss travel accounts are a depiction of how Europeans treated the Native Americans while being on display. In regards to this main idea, 3 preliminary ideas that I would like to discuss is the style of writing (very personal, not as preach like), and the effects of that style. I would also like to discuss the way he describes their physical attributes and what Europeans see as priorities. Through descriptions of their physical attributes Maungwudaus’s makes references that I think are worth focusing on.
