Those opting for the alternative assignment, instead of the 160 hours of internship) must complete all three sections:
Alternative assignment 1–Interview Project:
You must identify a command staff/supervisor, a veteran staff, and a relatively new (2 or fewer years) profession.
Please choose a career you are interested in and do your research on various agencies. Please write about your search. Next, pick an agency that you have a liking for based on your career interest. Explain what attracted you to the agency.
Design questions that are appropriate for the various ranks, as identified above. Make sure you list these questions accordingly.
Ask the questions and record their responses. Make room for any follow-up questions. Repeat this process for all three interviews.
Write your Paper with their responses. Share your perspectives towards the end. What did you learn about their work, the profession, and what drew them to the job? What has kept them coming to work? What kind of advice do they have for anyone seeking to go into that line of work?
This project will take some time and preparation. Remember, you will have opportunities to meet people and make an impression, so be prepared to leave a positive impression.
Alternative assignment 2– Interview General Public, 3 to 5 people:
Many of our career choices may be viewed differently by the general public. After researching and conducting interviews with career professionals, you will turn your attention to the general public. Before you reach out to the general public, do some research about public perceptions of your career choice. You are encouraged to look at one or two research journals and available surveys conducted by the establishment like the pew survey center, social media, popular journals. You can find popular news journals and career-centered journals publishing articles about the career. Read the pros and cons of the profession and the positive and negative perceptions about the trade broadly. Describe all that you found in your Paper.
Using what you have found in your broad readings, develop questions to ask the general public. Reach a broad range of people so that you will receive a well-rounded understanding of the perceptions people have about your career choice.
Make sure you list the questions and people’s responses. Reach out beyond your comfort zone—those who love and support the profession and those who question the work. Be patient and gentle as you listen and learn.
As you write the Paper, capture all that you could find through the articles, surveys, popular journal articles, and what the general public thinks and feel about the profession.
Alternative assignment 3– Staying Healthy:
You are required to identify three to five strategies to stay healthy in one’s chosen profession. Read extensively about staying healthy – emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally. You are required to reference journal articles, popular journals, and books that promote staying healthy and caring for oneself. The Paper should be between 5 to 6 pages long. Your research about healthy living while being employed should be applicable, and You should be able to talk about it and present it to your future employer. I want you to be creative and enthusiastic about what you are learning and sharing. Please make sure you write it like a mini research paper.
Summative Paper (all students are expected to complete the summative Paper):
I was hoping you could take this opportunity to share with me, the department, and the university at large about your journey. What did you listen to and learn during this journey towards your graduation? How did you determine your career path? What classes and experiences helped you and shaped your perspectives? How would you describe the totality of your journey?
Next, explore how you will respond to interview questions. Talk to your supervisors and colleagues in the field. What questions were they asked, or what problems are often asked of candidates seeking a position with agencies you are interested in working with? Write out the questions as comprehensively as you can. Next, share your thoughts on how you would respond to the questions. You must know the agency and its mission and values. Your responses must reflect care for the agency, its community, and its political position. Be thoughtful and practice to be prepared.
Supervisor Evaluation ( if you are completing an alternative assignment, you have to evaluate your work as well)
You met with your supervisor and drafted your learning Contract. Now that you are done with your minimum of 160 hours, please meet with your supervisor again. Discuss with your supervisor, what you have learned, your progress, and ask for feedback.
Make sure your supervisor is capturing the content of the conversation. Your gathering with the supervisor will help them to write a comprehensive evaluation of your performance with the agency. When the supervisor completes their assessment on agency letterhead, you must upload that document to Dropbox.
Along with your agency’s performance, please make sure we have the number of hours you have completed with the agency, contact information for your supervisocixr, and any other relevant information.
