Notice the example exploration essay, Talking With Grandad on page 269 of your Norton Field Guide. He begins the essay as a memoir, but he ends the essay with an exploration of Alzheimer’s. Your exploration essay will take a topic from a previous essay and add to it, just like Diehl did in Talking With Granddad.

Example Topics: Memoir: If you wrote a Memoir about camping in national parks, you could further it by exploring laws that protect our national parks, the usage of national parks by the American public, or even the history of the national parks.

Structure: This essay should contain an:

  • Introduction: The essay should begin by defining or describing your subject with an anecdote, or with an observation. For example, in Talking With Granddad Diehl begins with a memoir of an interaction with his grandad which is an observation. Here, you could revise your memoir essay and use it as part of the introduction.
  • Body: Next you will explore your topic with observations, definitions, and research. In Talking With Granddad, Diehl describes artist William Utermohlen’s self-portraits, and then he discusses neurologist Bruce Miller’s comments on artistic creativity among people with brain diseases. These topics support Diehl’s observations about Alzheimer’s, and they allow him to expand his knowledge on the disease affecting his grandfather.
  • Conclusion: Conclude the essay with material for further thought, or a statement about the implications of your topic. Diehl concludes with a commentary about what is important to maintain a relationship with a person with Alzheimer’s, and he says that showing love to his grandfather was a simple as just being with him.

You can get creative with your conclusion if you want, but make sure to carefully craft a conclusion so that the paper doesn’t abruptly end and leave the audience wondering.
