Identify a key theme for each period. For example, the trend towards indoor relief in the early 1800s, or the 4 categories of need in the Elizabethan Era.

For your final paper, you will be writing a summary of the social welfare landscape of each major period we covered throughout the course. The outline for your paper should follow this pattern and each section should be titled in bold:

Introduction
Feudalism
Elizabethan England
Colonial American
Antebellum America
Civil War & Reconstruction (you can break this into two sections if you prefer)
Progressive Era
Depression & New Deal
Conclusion
Do not be exhaustive in your description of each period. Rather, you should practice the art of summary and give the reader a general idea of how the poor were handled in each period. Each section should be 1-3 paragraphs long. You may use quotes but do not rely on them to write your paper for you. You may describe some programs to give the reader insight into the era but you wont have room to describe all the programs. Rather, describe policies that affected lots of programs (like indoor relief).

This is a test in your ability to synthesize complex information and put it into clear and simple writing. You will want EACH PERIOD to include the following information in any order you deem most logical:

*A general description of the time period, including dates and major events characterizing the era
*A description of who the poor and needy were, and how they were viewed
*Identify a key theme for each period. For example, the trend towards indoor relief in the early 1800s, or the 4 categories of need in the Elizabethan Era.
*A description of who provided the majority relief efforts of the time (government, lords, private charities, etc) and what these services looked like?

Note: I listed 10 required sources just so that there would be enough available for you to get the info for each category, but if you have more, or less, than 10 sources, that is totally fine as long as each of the 7 time periods above are researched and the info requested is written in.
