Please consider the texts from our Norton Anthology and other readings which we have reviewed thus far, are currently discussing, and will consider this semester, including Emersons Nature, Thoreaus Where I Lived, and What I Lived For and Poes The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Father. Please also consider the texts which we have and will cover while working on this paper, such as Dickinson and Whitmans poetry and Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper.
For this final assignment, please compose an intensive and meaningful research paper that details your views and perspectives on a particular notion or idea about American Literary
Renaissances. Draw upon your questions and comments from our weekly reading discussions
and in-class conversations. Have we encountered similar views in our course offerings? Where?
Have we read texts that challenge these views? Which ones? Find and discuss these concepts in your essay. Please be both considerate and critical in your investigation and refer to the multiple texts that we have covered in class. Did Thoreaus thesis inspire you in any way? Was Dickinson and Whitmans poetry personally fulfilling to read? What about the human mind can we learn about through Poes short stories? Is it possible to find it? What about the role of women and the progress we have made over the recent centuries? What about American literature are you most interested in finding out? Do you have any positive experiences that lead you to your working perspective and thesis?
Please recall our familiarization with the universitys library and include relevant supporting
evidence from scholarly sources to reinforce your claims. In a similar fashion to our synthesis and argumentative papers, please build upon your skills from narratives and rhetorical analyses. Be thorough in your research and courageously dive deeply into your stance. You are at the center of this paper, so please be mindful of what you would like to explore. A strong research paper will also be cognizant of counterpoints to your ideas and include a conscious acknowledgment of multiple perspectives.
Your final essay should be approximately 5-7 pages in length and conform to MLA or APA guidelines (font, header, margins, double-spacing, etc.). Furthermore, it should include a minimum of five unique scholarly sources.
