Word Count: Your editorial should be a minimum of 1600-1800 words.
Citations: The in-text citations and References page should consistently follow APA guidelines. For assistance with this, consult the APA links here.
References: Include a References page. You must also reference and cite at least 6 of your sources throughout the body of your editorial. Referencing and citing more than 6 of your sources will help build credibility with your reader.
Format:
Your work should be double-spaced, 10-12 pt. clear/readable font, 1 margins
You do not need to follow APA guidelines for document formatting. (no title page, no running header, etc.) Instead, number your pages and include a header in the upper left-hand corner of page 1 with your name, the course, the assignment, my name, and date.
Title and Subheading: Include an original, catchy title that reflects the content and context of the editorial. Also, include a brief subheading under your title that briefly communicates the gist of your editorial and additional context for your reader.

Introduce the Issue in Your Community: Introduce the local iteration of the issue that is playing out in your community. Help your reader see whats happening in the community and how it is a complex issue with multiple stakeholders that have differing perspectives. Here you will want to reference the source of local journalism you found for your annotated bibliography to help your reader get as clear a sense as possible about whats happening in your community, including all the complex dimensions of it and how its impacting people in the community. If you did choose to conduct an interview with a relevant local stakeholder for one of your sources in your annotated bibliography, you will want to include their perspective in this section of your paper to better help your reader get a sense of what of voices in the community are saying.

Your Main Purpose in This Section: Inform your reader. Help your reader understand whats happening and how its impacting people in your community.
Length of Section: One to two (1-2) paragraphs

#2.) State Your Stake in The Issue: Here you will introduce yourself to your reader and help them see what your stake is in this issue. In this section, you can build your readers trust in you as a writer by helping them see that youre not only a credible person to write about this issue (since youve carefully researched it) but you can show them that you have shared interests with them as your readers (since youre all part of the same community.) Remember that one of your larger purposes is to persuade those who might be inclined to disagree with you, so in this section, youre trying to actively position yourself as a knowledgeable writer but also as a fellow citizen who has shared interests with your reader. Finally, in this section, youre openly acknowledging that this issue impacts you as a writer and that youre not an unbiased, objective writer–youre a part of what is being written about and your ideas are all the more valid because of that.

Your Main Purpose in This Section: Help your reader understand who you are as the writer of this editorial and what your stake is in this issue.
Length of Section: One to two (1-2) paragraphs

#3.) Outline How This Issue Has a Broader Impact: Here is where you can show your reader how this contentious issue is playing out beyond your community. In this section, help your reader get a sense of how this issue has implications beyond your local community, by showing how its impacting people on a broader level. Here is where youll want to pull in your research from national or international journalism. Help your reader see the connections between whats happening in your community and other iterations of this same issue playing out elsewhere.

Your Main Purpose in This Section: Help your reader see that whats happening in your local community is also happening in other communities, and on a larger level.
Length of Section: Three to four (3-4) paragraphs

#4.) Show That There is a Range of Perspectives: Here is where you will help your reader see that this issue doesnt impact all stakeholders in the same way and that not everyone is impacted identically. This is where youll include your sources that seek to include underrepresented groups. One of your purposes in this section is to further build your readers trust by showing them that youve consulted a range of perspectives and taken measures to check your own inherent biases as a writer.

Your Main Purpose in This Section: Help your reader see that this issue is complex and that not all stakeholders are impacted proportionally, in addition to helping your reader see that youve taken measures to fairly present a range of positions.
Length of Section: At least one (1) paragraph

#5.) Offer Your Informed Evaluation: After having carefully laid out all the various dimensions of this issue, here is where you will offer your informed opinion by stating your evaluation of whats going on in your local community. By now, you have worked to gain your readers trust by showing you are a knowledgeable expert on this issue and that youve sought to represent various perspectives, so youll now say whether you think whats happening in your community is good or bad, effective or ineffective, or whether its being handled well or poorly. More than likely, youll want to note how some parts of it are good and other parts are not good. (NOTE: For your second major project, youll be writing a type of proposal essay where you write to your local government saying what you think should, ought to, or must happen regarding this issue in your community. For this editorial, you wont be really getting into what you think should happen, but rather focusing on defining whats going on and saying whether it is good or bad [or both] although you may wish to end by briefly stating what you think should happen so that you can build on those ideas in your next essay.)

Your Main Purpose in This Section: Offer your informed opinion about whats happening in your local community. State whether its good or bad and why, or whether its being handled well or poorly (or both.)
Length of Section: At least one (1) paragraph, maybe two (2)
