Exam IV Essay Study Guide
The following are your essay questions for exam IV. Be able to write a coherent and comprehensive
essay addressing all aspects of each prompt. Be sure to include all course materials, key events, people,
legislation, etc., utilizing the 5Ws to fully explain each topic, term, and ideology.
1. Discuss the Cold War from the end of WWII to the 1980s. What factors created it? How did it
affect American life at home? What was the cold wars role in Foreign policy and relations? Did
the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall end the Cold War? Is communism still (in 2019) a
threat to the American way of life? What policies and events occurred in the 1980s either
heated up or help bring about an end of the Cold War?
2. Discuss the various protest movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Be sure to discuss what they
were fighting for, who the typical participants were, any key figures of the movement, and their
success or failure to achieve their goals. What are the protest movements of the 2000-2020s,
discuss the differences of the contemporary protests from those of last century.
3. Discuss the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century. What events and key figures led to
desegregation and the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965?
Discuss how successful these events were to ending inequality and discrimination in the 20th
and 21st centuries.
