This assignment is a research paper. It is a description of a current social issue. It means that your primary goal is to identify how this issue impacts people, groups, and/or institutions. Please use the following as your basic outline to help you spell out what aspects to include in your assessment. NOTE: Your paper does NOT have to include an abstract or outline page, however, you must use subheadings that reflect the different components below.

I. Introduction of Social Issue Your first page should be a summary of what you intend to assess.

II.Theory Application which Sociological theory appears to provide an appropriate analysis of the issue? (i.e. Conflict, Functional, Symbolic, Feminist)

III. Historical Framework – What is the background history or prior research; what do we know about the issue? (This should be anywhere from two four paragraphs. The majority of your assessment should NOT be about the “history.”)

IV. Geographic Impact – Where is this social issue occurring? Is it in one local community; state; regional; nationwide; global?

V. Demographic Impact Who is impacted? (age, gender, race, class, education level, sexual orientation. Please include all that apply.) What are the current statistics on this topic? (National/local research)

VI. Describe the Problem – Make sure you refer back to the sociological theories you’ve chosen to help explain your assessment. What are some real-life examples you can provide to support your analysis. (From documented research, not your personal life).
Do not discuss solutions, as you will have time for that in the final two assignments.
