This book will be the subject of the critical book review that will explain the authors thesis and its contribution to the scholarship, along with an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence and reasoning. The purpose is to allow students to go into greater depth on a topic of personal interest (related to the course material). It will also serve as the basis for the research design. The review will be evaluated on the accuracy and thoroughness in identifying the key theses of the book, explaining and critiquing the authors reasoning, and the use of evidence. Mechanics, such as organization, grammar, and clarity of prose, will also be considered.”

Course Description
This course engages students in a critical consideration of the moral, religious, and theological implications of the Nazi regime, exploring the behavior and teachings of the Christian churches, their leaders, and lay adherents, as well as Jewish responses to the challenges posed by the Nazi regime to Jewish traditions and values. Questions of ultimate concern include: what is our responsibility to the other, and under what conditions is resistance to authority not only permissible but a moral imperative? How does one preserve internal meaning when confronted with impossible conditions, and what moral values are essential for preserving the self?
