Assignment Question

For this writing assignment, you will compose a Proposal Essay of 7-10 paragraphs, proposing a solution to a problem that affects a group of people including you or someone you know. Brainstorm issues in your own life or community.

Your solution must be aimed at getting some entity (business, school, government, organization, etc.) to do something based on your proposal. In other words, you are not simply writing to inform a general audience that there is a problem.

Although you will use your own personal experience, you will also need to conduct some research. Imagine that you are writing this for an academic journal on popular culture, and your purpose is to persuade a specific audience to take some action in order to solve the problem. See some example topics below. Once you’ve chosen a problem, brainstorm some possible solutions. You many need to conduct some preliminary research to come up with ideas. Then, narrow down your choices to the solution that you think will work best. Remember, no solution is perfect, but you must be able to convince your reader why your solution is best.

Once you can confidently answer the following questions, you should be ready to begin composing your essay:

Brainstorm Questions:

1. What is the specific problem you will address and how has it affected you or someone you know?

2. What solutions, if any, have already been proposed or tried?

3. What is the best solution and why? (This is the solution you will propose in your essay.)

4. What company, organization, government agency, etc. will need to employ this solution?

5. Are resources (including funds) needed to implement this solution?

6. What else needs to be considered in order to make this solution viable or effective?
