Cognitive (What do I think about this topic/internship experience? Example: I think that client resistance (in the form of no-shows) must be reframed from an empathic understanding of how difficult it is to come to counseling.)

After reading the assigned chapters in the course text, reflect on your internship experience (i.e., a particular client, group you have led, trend you have noticed, or skill that you possess or need to develop) as it relates to the weeks chapter topics. Then write four full 2-3 content page Reflection Papers (in APA Style, 7th edition) that weaves in at least 3 concepts or terms from the chapter incorporating the aspects below, and submit to the assignment drop box by the assigned date in the Course Schedule.

1. Cognitive (What do I think about this topic/internship experience? Example: I think that client resistance (in the form of no-shows) must be reframed from an empathic understanding of how difficult it is to come to counseling.)

2. Affective (What do I feel about this topic/internship experience? Name a variety of feelings words, and own them using I statements. Example: I felt irritated when my client expressed resistance via repeated no-shows to our individual sessions.)

3. Behavioral (What am I doing or what will I do differently about this topic/internship experience. Example: After repeated no-shows, I initiated a process discussion with my client, where we discussed reasons that counseling was or was not helpful to him. I learned that I need to be more concrete in connecting the homework assignments to his goals in treatment.)

The purpose of this assignment is to synthesize clinical and conceptual knowledge across the counseling curriculum.

5th paragraph, if you have space, an insightful meaningful reflective conclusion (not restating).
It can be valuable for students to view examples of previous Reflection Paper. Doing so can be one way to expand your writing. Other ways include using the NSU Writing Center or getting feedback from peers. Attached below is a Reflection Paper sample. Your paper’s content will be different depending on your experience.
Review Reflection Paper instructions in syllabus
Review the prompts in the syllabus.
Review rubric in syllabus, take note of the differences between Exceeds, Meets and Does Not Meet.
Review the sample.
For the Affective I feel: use a feeling word, an emotion. This is often overlooked by Internship students. In informal casual conversation “feel” broadly substitutes for “think” or believe”. In counseling and for the purposes of this paper “feel” is describing an emotion.
Plan NSU writing center appointments early (they accept 30 days in advance). I will receive confirmation of your appointment.
A 2nd year graduate student level, well organized well developed paper with no grammar, spelling, punctuation, mechanical, or paragraph structure errors is expected.
Title page, abstract, references & use of subheadings are not needed.
