Outline the main ideologies and geopolitical aims during the Cold War. Show these ideologies and policies in practice by drawing on at least one case study.
Examine anti-colonialism and/or economic nationalism in the Third World during the Cold War. Analyze in depth at least one example of a struggle for political and/or economic independence, and explain how Cold War dynamics affected this struggle.
Analyze counterrevolution and counterinsurgency, focusing at least on one historical example and providing the necessary context and background.
Examine nuclear war planning during the Cold War. You should explain the Cold War context and describe at least one crisis.
Analyze the transition from the Bretton Woods system to neoliberalism. Explain which political events facilitated neoliberal reforms, with specific examples.
Analyze the latest globalization in historical perspective. Explain what middle and long-term developments led to it. Give examples of winners and losers of globalization, drawing on whichever readings from the entire course help us to understand the current world system.
Analyze global warming from a historical perspective, focusing on the middle and long-term causes, drawing from readings from the entire course to understand the Anthropocene. Explain what economic interests have gotten in the way of concerted action to reverse or decrease the effects of global warming.
