Psychiatric Case Study:
The patient is a 22 year old Caucasian Male who has been admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit after an initial psychotic break. He was a sophomore at a local university, lived in a dorm on campus, who was found wandering in a local neighborhood partially dressed, speaking in an incoherent speech pattern, with persecutory delusions, and agitation. He was admitted and placed on an involuntary hold.
The first few days of the hospitalization have been difficult. His family is understandably very upset and concerned about long-term prognosis. He is not bathing, refusing food because it is “poisoned”, and only takes his medications intermittently. He has received 3 intramuscular PRN injections of Haldol, Ativan, and Benadryl.
Routine medications started are : Zyprexa 5mg 1 QAM , Cogentin 0.5mg QAM
