HIST 163: Ethnic Identity and Conflict in China
Paper Prompt for Paper II

Paper 2:
For your second paper, choose ONE of the following groups (Xiongnu/Hsiung-nu, Khitans, Koreans, Uighurs, Other Northern Neighbors, Mongols, or Han Chinese). Based on assigned reading, write a 4-5 page paper defining this particular group in the premodern context and what the historical understanding of such group classification meant (i.e. Upon what was it based? Was the identity of the group rigid from the perspectives of people who belonged to the group and/or the people who were outside it? How did ingroup and outgroup definitions of this group differ or agree?) Be sure to structure your essay as a cohesive entityuse your paper to make an argument about the group you are discussing.

Paper 2 Topic:
Your Paper Topic must include the single group you are writing about, your basic argument about them, and one or two of the sources you will use–in proper bibliographic format.

Format reminders:
Provide a title page with your name, the title of your paper, and the name of the group you are discussing (unless it is made completely obvious in your title).
Do NOT put your name on the pages that contain the body of your paper.
DO put your title at the top of the first page of the body of your paper.
Make sure your pages are numbered.
Follow the citation method outlined for your first paper assignment.
Remember that footnote reference numbers follow the period.
Punctuation is generally contained within quotation marks.
Consult me re: block quote format.
As always, use 12-point legible font, one inch margins and double spacing.
