Research Essay
For this assignment, you will write a 6-8 page research essay. You will choose your own topic and develop a research question, which will provide a guideline for you to follow your research wherever the information takes you. The careful formulation of a solid research question about your topic is crucial to ensure your inquiry will be effective. One you have developed a questionand that question has been approved by myselfyoull conduct research that will help you answer it.
Your aim here will be to make use of the research that you discover to help you to shape your essay. To do that, youll need to find a variety of sources that are relevant to your topic and read them carefully enough that youll be able to summarize their main points for use in your essay. Youll want to be sure that youve included as least one opposing point of view.
The following types of sources must be incorporated into your essay:
At least 2 academic sources (an article from a peer reviewed journal)
At least 2 popular media sources (social media, a website such as Vox, a newspaper or magazine)
Before completing your research paper, you will write a topic reflection, a research proposal, which we will discuss during our one-on-one conferences, and a report on your research in progress. As with all other essays, you will hand in your research paper with a reflection.
COMPLETE ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS:
You have developed a clear research question which has been approved by your instructor. You have a clear and arguable thesis statement.
You have engaged with your subject in a meaningful way.
Your essay is well organized and outlined, with clear transitions between paragraphs.
You successfully analyzed and synthesized your quotations and sources, as opposed to repeating the content in the sources.
You have an introduction which serves as a guide for the essay and a conclusion which contextualizes the essay that is not just a repetition of the introduction)
You have completed the research proposal on time.
You have submitted your essay on time.
You use at least two scholarly sources and two popular media sources in your essay. Your essay does not have any grammar errors that impede understanding.
Your citations and quotations are in proper MLA format and are properly placed within the essay, with introductions and analysis.
