I’d like you to think about Ramus’ conception of rhetoric. He claims that rhetoric has no epistemic function – meaning that rhetoric/oratory cannot reveal any truths in its use. He says we must rely on judgement/dialectic to know, then use rhetoric to present that knowledge to others. This is in direct opposition to Aristotle and Cicero, who have been the standard on which most classical rhetorical theory is based. Instead, he seems to align with Plato’s conception of “noble rhetoric.” Do you agree with Ramus? Why/why not?
