Health Assessment

Focus on writing a scholarly post on:

1. A Health promotion topic in greater detail. Discuss how your health promotion topic is influenced by developmental variations such as age.

For example healthy people 2030, addressing tobacco consumption, childhood obesity, stroke awareness – there are many . You can see the connection between childhood obesity as a developmental variation as it occurs in childhood. When you look at smoking what group or groups of people does this affect? Can you see the connection between mental health and smoking? & also older generation of adults smoke? why would this occur? I think about how the older generation of adults did not know all the bad consequences of smoking. Young adults/ children’ today get education to prevent them from smoking. My children’s in middle school had to take a health education course where they learned about smoking and drugs.

2. Address how you will apply the broad learning outcomes / course learning outcomes in your practice.

Learning outcomes:

Review and perform a comprehensive health assessment to include cultural, psychological and spiritual implications.
Evaluate evidence based practice to guide health assessment and health education.
Discuss health promotion, disease prevention as it applies to the individual.

Discussion Post One (for reference)
Black (2019) noted that nursing is a health care science that focuses on the wholeness of human-environment health and healing through caring. It is the care given to people regardless of their age, religion, gender, culture, or psychological backgrounds. According to Coster et al. (2018), nursing is a vital part of the provision of healthcare services that can significantly impact the health outcomes of the patients. Nursing is a service offered in different places like hospitals, homes, schools, and workplaces. In the current discussion, I focus on the cultural, psychological, and spiritual components in caring for patients. Considering the concepts mentioned above, I will delve into three topics, language barrier, terminal illness, and religion critical in nursing practice. These topics are core to the nursing practice and are part of it.
Language Barrier
AlShamsi et al. (2020) offer that a high level of satisfaction among medical professionals and patients can never be achieved with a language barrier. Language barriers breach the communication between nurses and patients and hinder the provision of the best care. Some extensive healthcare facilities and institutions have interpreter services to address the language barrier, which constitutes a cultural issue. In my nursing role, I attend to patients from different cultural backgrounds and language proficiencies. The significant challenge I have faced is communicating with patients experiencing language difficulties. Given that such patients understand little or no English, I use an interpreter to communicate with the patient. The interpreter can be either my colleague or the patients family member. Sharing medical information and providing treatment becomes more effective when the patient understands the instructions thoroughly.
Terminal illnesses

Wang et al. (2017) reveal that people who suffer from terminal illnesses have psychological distress. These people do not require medical care only but also emotional support as well. In dealing with terminally ill patients, I take the responsibility of understanding their situation and care for them even when their pain becomes unbearable. I take time to encourage them when they become psychologically unstable. I also take it upon myself to recommend any hospice services in the area where the patient may get more help and support.
Religion
Spiritual care entails an essential component of all-inclusive care. Religiousness is a complex aspect that has diverse meanings to different persons. According to Cooper et al. (2013), the necessity to offer healthcare that incorporates the spiritual and other aspects of faith is emphasized. Since religion is an integral part of every human being, it is to be respected at all times. In my role as a nurse, I take care of patients with different spiritual beliefs. I mainly assess and consider the patients’ spirituality to be aware of my limits. I also ask open questions to my patients about their spiritual needs and refer the patients to the healthcare chaplain if need be. The move helps me to care for my patients without infringing on their faith competently.
Conclusion
Working as a nurse and serving people with the language barrier, terminal illnesses, and different religious beliefs require more than medical training. One may need to source for an interpreter if there are communication problems due to language difficulties. A nurse should develop more patience and understanding when handling terminally ill patients due to their psychological instability. Besides, a patient whose beliefs seem different requires tolerance and respect for their religion.
