Do video games make children and adults violent?

For this assignment, you will write a (minimum 1500 words) causal argument attempting to
persuade an audience to accept your explanation of an issue, such as a particular action, policy, or
change. A causal argument attempts to discover the true causes behind the effects or to trace from the
causes the effects that have already resulted or that probably will result. Also, you must examine the
issue from multiple angles, discussing possible objections to your claims.
Causal Argument Structure: A basic outline for a causal argument should look like this.
1. Introduction: In your introduction, summarize the details of the issue. This may take one or two
paragraphs. End with a thesis statement that makes an assertion about causes or effects.
2. Support: Provide detailed support for your claim with a focus on the reasons or a sequence of
events that caused something to happen.
3. Opposing Views: Address the opposing views. What problems exist with your claim? Be sure to
bring the focus back to your points in relation to the causes or sequences of events you address.
4. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of your essay and relate your issue to the bigger picture.
If you think that something needs to change, you can propose an action plan for change. In
support of your argument, incorporate two to three (2-3) outside (secondary) sources.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to practice and develop the ability to construct, define,
argue and support a causal argument, to generate a thesis based on causal criteria, and arrange, draft,
and write a causal argument essay.
