In the most recent poll, Robert Frosts The Road Not Taken emerged as Americas favorite poem. Many readers see it as simple celebration of American individuality and nonconformity. A deconstructive reading, however, would suggest otherwise. In this short essay, you read the poem in a deconstructive way.
I suggest that you set up your essay as a double reading, which Parker describes on page 91 in How To Interpret Literature. That is, you provide a coherent argument (perhaps in your first body paragraph) that relies on simple binaries and a coherent, unified interpretation.
Then the rest of the essay deconstructs that interpretation with reference to key deconstructive terms or concepts from our readings and class discussion. These might include “breaking down the binary,” showing internal contradiction, identifying moments of aporia, questioning assumptions behind the text, decentering the text, employing the Derrida concept of diffrance and/or explaining how meaning always proliferates in the poem.
