Theoretical Explanations for Juvenile Delinquency

This assignment will allow students to become familiar with current theoretical explanations for juvenile delinquency. Siegel and Welsh (2017) discuss a number of explanatory approaches, e.g., classical deterrence theory, psychological explanations, sociological theories, etc. As part of this assignment, students are required to select two of these theories and to present a comparison [similar elements] and a contrast [different elements] of the two selected approaches. Students must keep in mind that simply presenting content information for each approach [i.e., a paraphrased description extracted from Siegel & Welsh, 2017] is not sufficient. The paper must identify aspects in which the approaches can be compared and contrasted and then should include these in a creative but organized manner (i.e., clear headings, tables, figures, etc.).

In addition, students must elaborate on the implications for treatment and for social services, including considerations for each approach with regard to gender, school and education, substance abuse, and mental health issues. The paper will be between four and six pages in length, must follow APA format guidelines and can include creative approaches to presenting information, that is, it does not need to be six pages of continuous narrative and can include tables and/or figures to assist the readers understanding of key points.
