Some potential factors that could affect the productivity of heavy construction equipment is the neglect of appropriate maintenance by a certified vendor/workshop/ technician. Another factor that can impact productivity is choosing the wrong equipment for the jobsite e.g. using a bulldozer to remove asphalt for a road project. Additionally, a lack of work experience with heavy equipment can lead to a decrease in productivity as there is more room for errors due to unfamiliarity with the equipment.

Utilizing analytics is one current technology that is being used to help increase productivity. Identifying actual fuel usage can help predict when maintenance will be necessary therefore the pm can plan to have a replacement equipment ready. Another advantage of analytics is being able to identify operator efficiency as the data shows work times equipment usage.

Other technologies that are being used to enhance construction equipment productivity are telematics, integrated grade control systems, payload weighing and drones. Telematics system can provide machine diagnostics alerts that help prevent downtime, theft, and misuse ( Conexpo ConAgg, para 6). Integrated grade control systems on the other hand provide barrier fee, advanced three-dimensional grade control. Payload weighing provided real time updates on accurate load measurements eliminating time loss traveling to weighing stations. Lastly, the advancement of drones is concerning the construction industry and increases accurate, exceptionally detailed topography of job sites.
