Lady Audley’s Secret

Read Lady Audley’s Secret Volume 2 chapter 7 and answer the questions below.

In both the 18c and the 19c, knowledge was hotly debated. What counted as knowledge? Do dreams, suppositions, and presentiments count? verbal or written knowledge? must it be visible, tangible? personal or institutional knowledge? Knowledge in the Victorian period was most valued and most true when it was situated, specific, and grounded in empirical facts. The scientific method became the standard way of obtaining and verifying facts (one form of knowledge). How does Roberts pursuit of George grapple with different forms of knowledge?

Create a list of at least six different clues that Robert gathers to this point in the novel. Consider your list what different categories of knowledge do you see? What is the context around which Robert obtains that information (from whom? where? etc.) Does Robert, or the novel, seem to give more weight to one of kind of knowledge? What is the effect of this knowledge on Robert?
