Consider that adaptations are often updates of stories. That is the say they do not always follow the author’s original choices for setting and other elements. In fact, many adaptions add in backstory, change endings, eliminate or add characters. However, adaptations rarely stray from the theme.
NB: The one story you may NOT choose is “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison.
Working within the limitations of this mini-essay, share your adaption ideas. Who would you cast? Where and/or when would you set it? How would you address symbolism and other central elements? How would you preserve the theme? Please address all parts of this question in your reply and explain WHY you made your selections.

Question 2:
Reading literature, especially short fiction, should be joyful, or surprising, or emotional, or any combination of feelings and memories it evokes. We do not all agree on what makes for great fiction and what does or does not belong in the canon of stories that are published in textbook anthologies. You can see from just the size of our textbook how difficult it is to represent each aspect of the genre.
With that in mind, I want to know what you have enjoyed or disliked or would have preferred to read. I curated our selections to be representative of the broad American spectrum and will do so for our upcoming poetry and drama sections.

If it is one we have read, convince me that I should or should NOT assign it next semester. (I assume you’ll “argue” FOR a piece you enjoyed and AGAINST a piece you disliked, but I may willing be wrong).

In either case, your answer should be multiple paragraphs, should adhere to the conventions of academic English and the study of literature, should be carefully proofread for typos and errors, and should employ course concepts to support your choice.
Remember, I am the only audience for your response, and I truly want to build my courses with student input. Please, since this is an untimed question, answer with honesty and after a moment of review and reflection.
