As a department chair at a high school, you are hearing rumors from students and other faculty and staff that one of your tenured faculty is not following the mandatory curriculum. The most recent district benchmark testing data indicates unusual discrepancies in student performance for this teachers students.
What leadership and/or management actions would you take to further investigate and resolve the issue?
As organizations decentralize, decision-making is pushed to lower levels of the organization structure. While a goal of decentralization may be to improve decision-making by empowering employees, the practice is not without consequences (Thomas 2005). An organization publishes a code of ethics to communicate its commitment to ethical business practices and to provide direction to employees regarding expected behaviors (Boudreaux & Steiner, 2005). However, even with a published code of ethics in place, ethical misconduct occurs in the workplace. As chair of the department, my first action would be to verify the rumors. Once it has been verified, the next step is to point it out to the employee and document it. If the misconduct conduct continues, more formal discipline will be necessary (Development & Alumni Relations Report). Principle I of the Code of Ethics for Educators 6c states that the educator shall not grant any advantage to any student (National Education Association, 2020). If the allegations are proven to be true, the teacher is in direct violation of the code of ethics.
Explain your rationale
After meeting with the teacher and documenting the meeting and the items that were discussed, monitoring of the teacher would occur on a bi-weekly basis, with test results being submitted to the chairperson for comparison. If the test results continue to be inconsistent based on the students previous grades, and it appears that the tenured teacher is still not in compliance, steps would be taken to have him brought before the school board, at which time it will be determined whether he/she should be brought before the board of education for misconduct. Commitment to students under Principle I of the Educator Code of Ethics states that the educator works to stimulate the acquisition of knowledge and understanding (National Education Association, 2020). This cannot fairly take place if the teacher is showing favoritism to certain students. Principle I- 4 also states that the educator shall make a reasonable effort to protect students from conditions that are harmful to learning (National Education Association, 2020). The misconduct harms the educational process because we are not able to see the actual ability of the students if the grades are inflated.
