Since a tenured teacher can not be fired without a fair trial, I would take the necessary steps to properly investigate these actions against this teacher. A tenured faculty member has the right to a hearing before being fired. Tenure, by definition, is an indefinite academic appointment, and tenured faculty can only be dismissed under extraordinary circumstances like financial exigency or program discontinuation (Dutt-Ballerstadt, 2021). With this information, we have gathered is just simply rumors until a proper investigation is opened and completed, we will have to officially gather statements from each student, faculty, and staff in order to properly complete this investigation along with the test results from each other this teachers classes. Tenure is simply a right to due process; it means that a college or university cannot fire a tenured professor without presenting evidence that the professor is incompetent or behaves unprofessionally or that an academic department needs to be closed or the school is in serious financial difficulty (n.d., 2021).
Being able to communicate effectively with this teacher would be one leadership action I would take. I would address the allegations with this teacher to hear their side, I will have to be firm and show no favoritism. As department chair, I am a department chair at a high school, you are hearing rumors from students and other faculty and staff that one of your tenured faculty is not following the mandatory curriculum. The most recent district benchmark testing data indicates unusual discrepancies in student performance for this particular teachers students (n.d, 2021). My duty is to make sure no other staff was involved and each student is getting a fair and proper teaching environment. A department chair’s primary role is to examine the operations of the department as a whole and the department’s relationship to their institution more broadly (n.d., 2019).
I would also need to make sure we can control whats going on in school, I would like to have everything in order before we proceed with an official statement to staff, students, and parents. I would also have to verify how and when we will be able to retest these students. Management is defined as the way something is handled, careful treatment, supervising skills, or those in charge of a business or group (n.d, 2021). If it is proven that the teacher in fact violated our code of conduct then we will have to take proper actions which mean termination.
