You’re asked to consider carefully the opening chapter 1 of Christopher Hitchens’ Letters to a Young Contrarian. In it, the author begins by addressing a fictitious audience (“My dear X”), and descends from there into an analysis of how the author arrived at the term “contrarian” in the title of his book, as opposed to the many other options for terms he outlines in the chapter.

Given the above, then, you’re asked to comment as to why, in your estimation, the author settled on “contrarian.” What is it about the term that seems to work well for the direction the author want to take? How is that term distinct, and different, from all the others? And finally, offer an attempt at decoding how the term aligns with what the argument seems to be, at least the argument gleaned from the first few pages of the book as a whole.
