Argument: a clear and objective argument should be presented, one that is supported with scientific evidence, and the argument should be without logical fallacies.

Length: Minimum of 4-5 pages, typed, double-spaced, MLA format. A Works Cited sheet will be needed, also, but this does not count as part of the minimum page count.

Sources: Uses at least 4 within paper in some fashion; they must be properly cited and well integrated. A variety of types of sources should be used. Do not rely on general internet sources. Approach: Your approach to this essay is not to argue your position from the beginning; rather, to present one side of the debate and then the other side by using sources to provide commentary for each side. In the concluding section of the essay, assert your stance and discuss why you align with that chosen position.

Elements of the Essay: You need to examine the topic for a debatable claim. If the claim is arguable, then you already have a focus for your essay. Your topic should be one that can be supported using the scientific method and the essay should not contain logical fallacies.

Purpose of the Essay: To persuade your readers to believe/accept your position.

Audience: Your audience is an educated person who knows relatively little about your topic. This means you need to explain more than if you assumed an audience familiar with the topic.
