Write a 300 word or so essay that examines one of the questions listed below. (Again, 300 words is not a word limit, but just a guideline, something to shoot for when you are writing.) I broke up the questions into two larger areas of focus, each with two (related) topics. Just pick one of the topics to write about.

Bad Conscience and the Origin of the State (sections 16-18)

1. Origin of the State and Bad Conscience (Sections 17-18). Discuss Nietzsches ideas regarding the origin of the state. What happens to the instinct for freedom? How does this create bad conscience?

2. Bad Conscience (Sections 16, 18). As Nietzsche sees it, what accounts for the internalization of man or the origin of his interior life (or soul)? How does this create bad conscience? Why does Nietzsche see bad conscience as in illness?

Punishment and Progress (sections 12-15)

3.Discuss Nietzsches views on punishment (sections 12-15). Why doesnt bad conscience grow out of punishment? What does punishment do?

4.Discuss Nietzsches views on progress and evolution (section 12). How is progress measured? Why is adaptation only a secondary process? What is primary? How does this fit into the larger discussion of punishment? (The initial focus, here, should be on his ideas regarding progress and evolution. After you discuss this, tie it in to his discussion on punishment.)

Additional Notes (true for all the writings assignments):

You must support your arguments with the material that was assigned and you must cite it accurately. (Parenthetical reference [in-text citation] is enough. You dont have to follow any style guide or rules just make sure your reader [that would be me] can find what youre pointing to.)

The use of outside sources in these assignments is prohibited. All of the material you use and cite must come from what was assigned in this module. The whole idea of this class is to simply work with the assigned material, to explore and play with these ideas. Im not looking for perfection, just an honest effort. Do the work and trust yourself. (Just make sure your thinking is grounded in the text. The study questions and class discussions are meant to help guide you.) If you use an uncited source and fail to cite it, you will get an F. Plagiarism is never acceptable.

Double-spaced is preferred. (You wont be wasting paper.) Google docs and Apple .pages do not work with Canvas. You will need to resubmit them if use these apps. Use Word (.doc or .docx) or submit a .pdf file.
