Six Sigma at Ford
COLLAPSE
Holtz & Campbell (2004) noted that Motorola developed Six Sigma in the 1980s, later popularized in the 1990s by others, including General Electric. According to Ries (2018), Six Sigma is a quality improvement method used often to help find defects in the business model to reduce them and make the business more effective than before. Six Sigma’s over-arching objective is changing how an organization thinks about its processes, services, and business. Ford uses Six Sigma principles to develop corporate business plans and implemented Six Sigma on a wide scale in their company in manufacturing, purchasing, product development, human resources, information technology, facilities management, and corporate real estate. Holtz & Campbell highlighted specific projects utilizing Six Sigma in the facility management and corporate real estate functions. These projects include addressing the office move process, building/energy shut-down, lease reconciliation, utility payments, taxes and depreciation, and numerous building and equipment maintenance-related processes.

SixSigma (2021) posited that Ford saw changes in cost reduction, improved quality, customer satisfaction, and solvent consumption, lowering their environmental impact. Ford made changes to its costly production system by implementing Six Sigma. Through Six Sigma, Ford was able to eliminate unnecessary resources. Ford also reduced the company’s number of defects per million in adherence to Six Sigma and improved its overall quality. Reduced defects led to Ford’s improved customer satisfaction rates, resulting in increased company productivity and happier customers. By implementing Six Sigma, Ford incorporated its green philosophy, which led to reduced costs, increased quality, and improved customer satisfaction. Ford needed to address its over 20,000 opportunities for defects from manufacturing cars. Six Sigma allowed the company to reduce its defect rate significantly. Ford experienced the continuous improvement that comes from implementing Six Sigma.
