Compare and contrast the main points of all the assigned readings/materials: What do they all have in common? How are terms used in one reading applicable to the other readings? Note any important differences between the readings. (An important difference is one where the ideas of the first limit or contradict the ideas of the second.) This section should be two paragraphs.

The readings and videos to answer these questions will be in the files and links below. There will also be an example for the journal Entry in the files:

Instructions:
1. Section Summary

A. Individual Reading Summaries: Begin by recounting the main points or themes and define any key terms in EACH of the readings/videos for that section. Each summary should be a few sentences up to two short paragraphs. Key terms may be bulleted.

C. Provide an overall summary of the assigned materials. What is the take-away message from them as a whole? Summarize, but don’t editorialize; save your opinions for section 2. This section should be one paragraph.

2. Personal Reflection
Here, reflect upon the chapters. This section should be approximately one to two pages total.

A. What thoughts and feelings do you have about the assigned materials? On what are you basing your opinions?

B. What don’t you understand and why? Where are you being challenged to examine your previous beliefs and opinions?

C. What more would you like to know?

3. Multi-media/Cultural Artifact Application
Beyond critically reflecting on the readings, it is important to see how what we are reading and discussing in class relates to the everyday world of U.S. society. In order to make these connections, you are to examine popular culture in such sources as newspapers, magazines, movies, TV shows, music videos and lyrics, CD covers, others blogs, photographs, memes, artworkany and all elements from popular culture and/or the mass media. These things are called cultural artifacts. I believe that many of you will already know some songs, videos, blogs, etc. that connect to the assigned materials.

A. Select a cultural artifact that connects to the week’s assigned materials.

Briefly but adequately describe the cultural artifact youve chosen to apply to the assigned readings. Scan, copy or download and attach/embed or provide a link to the media article, as best available. Where known, state the artist or creator, date of creation, and any important facts about the artifact.

B. Relate the cultural artifact to the topics and materials discussed in the readings. BE SPECIFIC! Answer as many of the following questions are relevant: How does it support or contradict the readings? What does this artifact mean in light of the readings? Does it work to maintain or challenge dominant ideas about race, class, gender or sexuality? How has this cultural artifact contributed to your understanding of the concepts from the readings? How has your understanding of the readings and course concepts contributed to your understanding of this piece of media? (note, you need not answer each of these questions–they are just to guide your thinking).
