Informal Research Essay
The informal research essay uses mostly the same research techniques but allows your voice, ideas, and opinions to become part of the discussion and discovery of ideas. Keep in mind the characteristics of an informal research essay:
Often explicitly subjective, using first person
Exploratory in nature (but still analysis or argumentative)
Written for an audience of non-experts
Tentativeness about conclusions allowed
Process of coming to learn about topic part of the essay itself
Purpose is to answer a question or investigate/explore an issue of interest to you
For this assignment, you will construct a 10-12 page essay on a topic of your choice. Though you are not required to, you are allowed to go into a different area than your last paper try to find something that you are genuinely interested in. The key to this essay will be asking questions, answering them, and then asking the questions those answers raise. You will have to dig deep into this subject.
Sources and research
In order to complete a paper this size, you will need an abundance of information. There is a 10-source minimum for this project; these will all appear on your Works Cited/References page (as sources consulted).
While not required, I HIGHLY encourage you to use at least one interview source.
