Brian and Donna have been married for 25 years. They’re recent ’empty nesters’, as their youngest child has just left home for college. While their kids were in school, Brian and Donna were very active in volunteering to support their children’s activities. Both parents spent countless hours of their spare time in the evenings and on the weekends involved in activities at the school.
Now that the kids have moved out and Brian and Donna don’t have their volunteer work, they’ve both filled their time by being workaholics at their jobs. Where they used to spend all of their time engaged together in activities for their kids, they’re now spending all of their time working separately.
Each of them has complained that they never spend any time together anymore. When they have tried, however, they find it to be awkwardly quiet. They each have said that they “don’t have anything to talk about anymore.”
How can you use the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy to help Donna and Brian? What would you do, and what do you expect the outcome will be? Write a brief illustration of your intervention. You might consider including a brief dialogue to demonstrate how you would engage Donna and Brian in your intervention.
