Write the landlord a letter letting him know you are aware of the conditions and prepared to take steps (what might they be?) to compel him to clean up the rental units.

As a social worker you will be continually required to write letters, court reports, probation reports, requests for funding, and various other professional letters. These missives must be short, persuasive, and on point. They should not contain even one error! You must try to persuade the reader to grant your request in no more than one page. You must be honest! You may not exaggerate! To prepare for this, you will write three professional letters on behalf of your client for this assignment. These letter can be no more than a single page each ( 3 pages – one letter on each pager per scenario)

page 1 -Scenario 1

You are a school social worker in a high school. You have a male student you have worked with for three years. He is 16 years old. He struggles in school, often getting in trouble for cussing at teachers. He has had two fights recently at school. You have seen a marked increase in the anger he harbors.

Your student was adopted at age four by a family friend due to extreme neglect by his biological mother. This student has often told you he has never felt truly loved by his adopted family and you have witnessed much acrimony between him and his father, the only family member who ever comes to school for meetings, etc., for this student.

Recently his biological mother has re-entered his life. She has three children living with her who were never given up for adoption. Your student tells you he spends many weekends at his mothers home. His adopted family does not know or ask where he is or has been when he does not come home at night.

Your student goes before a judge in a week to be sentenced for a shoplifting charge. You have suggested to the probation officer working with your student that he would be better served by being sentenced to a treatment facility which could focus on his attachment and grief issues, rather than being sentenced to a corrections facility.

The P.O. suggests you write a letter to the judge making such a request.

Page 3 -Scenario 2

You are a social worker in a community agency. Your facility is the benefactor of a large private donation, which is targeted to providing services for clients who have been victims of domestic violence. Your agency has decided to spend the money on remodeling a facility that can house a number of social service providers under one roof who will work with victims of DV.

You want to provide services such as budget planning, vocational skills, college prep, self-defense, parenting and more. You have found the ideal spot in a strip mall where a gym is moving out but you have been meeting resistance from surrounding businesses who believe your clients will bring a bad element (their words) to the area and negatively affect their business.

Please prepare a one-page statement to be read at the next neighborhood meeting to discuss this.

Page 3 -Scenario 3

You are a social worker volunteering in an income-assistance program. You have noticed that many of your clients report renting from a well-known business man in your community. You have seen some of the houses your clients live in and are appalled at the condition. Vermin, inadequate heat, broken windows and locks that dont work are commonplace. Your clients are afraid to complain because they fear eviction.

Write the landlord a letter letting him know you are aware of the conditions and prepared to take steps (what might they be?) to compel him to clean up the rental units.
