Converging Streams of Worship: Creating A Contextual, Convergent Worship Service
Design a service plan for your own worshiping community that critically and creatively draws acts of worship, core values and key liturgical contributions from one worship stream/form/perspective different than your own. You will not have to implement this worship service, but this service should be able to be implemented in your own ministry context.
Each of the following elements should be included in the final submission:
Introduction: Begin your assignment with a three to four-paragraph introduction that includes a description of the demographics, denomination/stream and approach to worship of your current church or ministry context. Draw from your Know Your Roots assignment.|
Drawing from Another Stream: Write a two-page critical reflection on the unique theological and liturgical contributions of a stream of worship different from your own (such as Smiths Pentecostal, Sacramental, Evangelical or Pinsons Liturgical, Traditional Evangelical, Contemporary, Blended or Emerging). Highlight the unique styles of worship, core acts of worship, theological emphasizes and historical development of this stream. Utilize all of your course texts, to analyze and critically reflect on this particular worship stream.
Converging Streams: Write one-page describing how you will combine elements of this stream into your own communitys normal approach to worship. How will people most likely respond? Will they be challenged by a different approach? What elements or acts of worship of your own typical form will need to remain? Utilize Cherrys Worship Architect to aid in your discernment and analysis.
The Service of Worship: Include a detailed service plan including the specific words that will be sung, prayed, enacted and/or spoken. For the sermon, simply a title and specific Scripture is sufficient. There must be logic to the journey of worship and integrity in the placing and choice of repertoire. Clearly identify the specific acts of worship that are being drawn from a different stream from those acts of worship that are normative within your church. Give a detailed rationale for the choice of material in terms of both lyrics and music, where appropriate, and its positioning within the worship service. Please give precise details of the sources of the music that you have included in the plans. For all music used, include the composers and writers. For any creative acts of worship such as video, poetry, responsive prayers, drama, please include the links, scripts, graphics, etc.
Conclusion: Write a conclusion of three to four paragraphs stating how this service could enable transformative worship in your context. Identify potential risk associated with converging the streams in your context. Describe how the acts of worship from a stream different from you own might enhance worship in your community. Also, describe how you think this service might work in your church context (i.e. how would the overall service help people connect with God, respond to his Word and/or be formed for His mission).
